3 foot slope, approximately 10 foot out

by Brenda Anthony
(Birmingham, AL)

First I live in the deep south (Bham AL) and my problem is on the south side. I have a 3 foot slope in a 10 foot wide area, then there is the road. I can't have this wash away. I am planning to put a maintenance free fence at the top and I need a solution for the outside of the fence to keep the earth from washing away. I only have about an 8 foot length to worry with. Please help.

3 Foot Slope, Approximately 10 Foot Out
by: Kimberly

Hi Brenda, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thanks for asking the question on your three foot slope and wanting a solution so the bank doesn't wash away.

This is a great question and one many people have to deal with. I have had clients with the same problem. You have a couple of options to think about.

Your goal is to keep the slope from washing away. You are having the fence installed on the top. You could think about putting down jute throughout the hill. This is a commercial landscaping fabric that is used for slopes and banks. It is made out of burlap and works well. You also have the option of putting some small evergreen plants along the hill. This will depend on water availability along the slope. I have done the jute and shrubs along an embarkment and is a good solution.

Another option is to think about a terrace down the slope. You will actually make a terrace by removing soil and giving the slope a step like look. I have done this option as well.

You can also use the jute and some shrubs and take it a step further. Add series of three to five rocks throughout the slope. This will help with erosion.

I hope the couple of suggestions will help you make a decision with your slope problem. If you need more details feel free to ask. The best of luck to you Brenda, and let us know what you decide. Thanks again for asking the question and have a great day. Stay cool in Alabama, as it has been hot here in South Carolina.
