Ulex is native to western Europe, and North Africa. It will also do well in zones six through nine in the United States.
One of the unique aspects of this family, is the shrub does not bare many leaves. The fragrant and colorful rich yellow tone flowers emerge in springtime.
Ulex can take poor soil conditions, and can mature up to six feet tall. This specie is frost hardy, and can take full sun.
In sub-tropical and tropical climates, these shrubs should be protected from the summer sun and heat. This is also a great specimen in coastal areas.
Most of this family is very frost hardy, and loves cooler climates. The Elm will thrive in moist soil and full sun. The Elm trees are known for providing shade and also their colourful yellow foliage in the autumn season. A great specimens in a front or backyard.
This family will grow well in zones two through nine in the United States. The Vaccinium will thrive if the environment has an acid base and well drained soil. Blueberries prefer shade, and can be seen growing natural in woods in many regions. This family is noted for its berries.
The berries are colourful, and come in red, blue, and black tones. The sweetness of these berries are found in jelly, jams, pies and other baked goods. Flowers of pink, white, purple, or red appear in the summer months. This specie is commercially grown for fresh fruit, canning, and juice. A wonderful specimen for landscape and gardens.
The colourful Viburnum will grow well in zones five through nine in the United States. This family of evergreen, semi-evergreen, and deciduous shrubs are known for their fragrant and colourful flowers and berries.
Viburnum love well drained soil and sun or partial shade. They can be pruned after flowering, but if pruned, will produce less berries. I usually recommend to my clients to wait to prune until berries are done.
Some of the varieties produce large mass of blooms and will also vary when blooming takes place. This is a wonderful specimen for many style landscapes.
This family consists of evergreen and some deciduous trees and shrubs. Vitex adjusts to a variety of soil conditions and needs some shelter from the hot summer months.
It will thrive in moist conditions. The flowers are stalks of rich red, pink, and lavender tones. The New Zealand Chaste Tree can mature anywhere from thirty to sixty feet tall. This is another great specimen for landscapes and and a variety of garden settings.
With many different species, head on over to the properly pruning page to get some tips on trimming plants.
I hope this page has given you some new insight on some trees and shrubs starting with the letters U and V.
