Garden projects showing growing plants, herbs,or vegetables have been around for centuries.
Today, many of us plant for enjoyment. Some of us work the land to provide vegetables for meals.
Any plant material surrounded by other plants or a decorative feature, is considered a garden. One highlight to think about is putting a variety of flowers throughout your bed.
Your maple tree in your front yard is surrounded by day lilies and daisies. You have a kidney shape area in your backyard. Each of these are examples of a single bed, and considered a garden.
I look at a single bed the same way as an entire landscape project. You can use any shape for this bed, round, square, oval, or triangle.
Is this bed a focal point or an accent in your yard? A focal point is what you visually see when you walk into the area. An accent is on the sidelines, enhancing a focal point. The sky is the limit when choosing what you want to plant. Add one, three, or five plants and there you have it, your very own single bed area.
When I got into the landscape and design business, I had to do some research on different geographic locations as well as plants specimens. There was much to learn to help my clients achieve the look they wanted.

When you think of landscapes do you ever think about where to put some features. A bench in a oval shaped bed. Lay down 2 round oval pavers in front of the bench. Put two decorative pots on either side. Add a dwarf Arborvitae shrub in the center.
Surround the shrub with some Dianthus, Shasta Daisies or white candy tuft. Add a couple of ivy plugs to drape over the sides of the pot. A simple way to make a small area look dynamite. These are suggestions of plants. Use what you like!
A reminder, before you start any project the plan, prep, plant method is critical for the success of what you want to accomplish.
Above we talked about a kidney shape. An ornamental fruit or flowering tree could go in the center of the kidney. On either side of the tree could be a group of 5 evergreen shrubs. Indian Hawthorn, mop cypress,(false cypress) or a ruby Chinese Pizazz, (Loropetalum) are just a couple of choices.
Place them in a way that you will be able to admire them from as many angles. Add a bird feeder and bird bath. Do 3 mass planting of flowers. Pick your favorite ones from your zone. I could list hundreds of possibilities.

I try to spread the evergreen shrubs out and around the tree and flowers. You can finish this bed off with mulch, pine straw or a one to two inch decorative stone.
Now that we have touched on a single bed, let's turn the focus to different projects people are doing today. Think of a garden as a group of beds designed within a design.
When I had my greenhouse, I had up to 5,000 seedlings germinating. Fascinating to experiment and see their growth patterns. Inexpensive way to create a mass of color and texture in your own landscape.
