A Complete Landscape Home Design - Gardens With Trees And Flowering Shrubs
A complete landscape home design. Gardens full of trees, shrubs with color flowers for your very own property. This design was originally called Exclusively Executive. Some of my clients were looking for a total landscape plan for their entire property. Click here and
share your complete story about a very speical landscape garden project.
Many developments and subdivisions are totally cleared of all the trees and vegetation. Existing homeowners are in the opposite position as sometimes they have too many large trees and want the them cut down. Incorporating new trees, and a variety of colored shrubs creates a whole new look for any new or old home. This design, depending on time and finances can be done in phases or all at once. Below are is suggestions on different plants and possible walkways, a deck and patio along with front porch. My goal was so the homeowner could have views of the front landscape beds and also a birds eye view in the backyard.
A Complete Landscape Home Design And Design Key

- Cleveland Pear Tree - Deciduous tree growing thirty feet tall and can get thirteen to fifteen feet wide. Grows well in zones four through nine. Beautiful spring time white blooms. The Cleveland Pear tree will grow well in full sun, partial shade, or shade. The leaves are bright green in the spring until fall. In autumn, the leaves turn into vibrant tones of orange, red and purple. Some people prefer the Cleveland over the Bradford Pear, as the Cleveland is a more sturdy specimen. Great tree for a front or backyard.
- Yoshino Cherry Tree - Deciduous ornamental tree. This is one of my favorite trees especially in the spring time as the pinkish white flowers radiate all over the foliage. Grows twenty to thirty feet high and will grow ten to fifteen feet wide. Wonderful tree in zones five through eight. One of the best known areas this tree can be seen is in Washington D.C. The leaves are a rich dark green color.
- Leyland Cypress Tree - Evergreen tree growing anywhere from thirty feet to seventy feet high and fifteen to twenty feet wide. The Leylands are fast growers and can grow three to four feet a year. You can prune the top to keep it under control. It is a upright with long, soft needle like leaves. Great in zones six through ten. This tree is very popular for providing a privacy wall. Plant at least seven to ten feet apart. A divine tree for any new or old home.
- Indian Hawthorn - evergreen shrub with pink or white flowers in spring. Blue berries will appear in the in fall and winter months. Indian Hawthorn minor is a bigger shrub and will grow four to six feet wide. The major is a little smaller and will grow three to four feet high and two to three feet wide. Very durable shrub. Variety of zones but most will do well in zones four through nine. Popular for along your front of the home or good with any variegated shrubs.
- Mop Cypress - evergreen shrub growing well in zones five through eight. Variegated leaves of bright yellow and green. The leaves are long and skinny, and their texture and flowing pattern resembles a mop. Grows three to four feet high and three to four wide. Can take full sun but will also do well in part shade. A wonderful shrub for any garden area. Good shrub to accent next to a solid green plant.
- Chinese Pizazz - Loropetalum - evergreen shrub with purple and green leaves year around. Pink/red flowers will bloom in spring and summer. The Ruby Loropetalum is a dwarf and will grow 3 to 4 feet high and 3 wide. The larger versions will grow 8 to 10 feet high and 4 to 5 feet wide. The larger variety will need to be trimmed, unless you have it in an open area and want the shrub to grow naturally. Grows well in zones five through eight. Nice shrub next to the Mop Cypress.
- Liriope - evergreen grass like plant. Grows well in zones six through ten. Clumps of Liriope are often seen bordering walkways. garden paths, or landscaped beds. Grows twelve to eighteen inches tall. Comes in a solid color or variegated tone. Mondo grass is a solid dwarf variety and also great for borders. Liriope can be divided. There are a number of varieties with different color flowers and blackish - blue berries in the winter time.
- Walkway - A stone walkway leads from the sideway down to a bench. Match the color of the walkway with the color tones of your home. Create the walkway with or without cement. You can also use brick, or decorative stones.
- Bench - I decided to put one bench in the front yard. You can view the beds from either side, and also take in the sights of your shrubs along the front of the home. In spring, you will have a wonderful view of the flowering Cleveland Pear and Yoshino Cherry. Take a look in Outdoor Features

There are thousands of varieties available and will grow in most zones. Green leaves appear in the spring and in fall the leaves take over the beauty of spring and summer flowers. Maple leaves turn bright red, orange and yellow colors and make some of the most spectacular scenes at this time of year. There is nothing like fresh Maple Syrup!
- Encore Azalea - evergreen gorgeous Azalea blooming in the spring and again in the fall. Red, pink, purple, orange are just a few of the colors available. The Encore is primary a southern shrub but certain azaleas will grow further north. This shrub is great for mass plantings or surrounded by a variegated or evergreen bush. The Encore is a few dollars more but well worth the extra money.
- Blue Pacific Juniper - evergreen low growing shrub. Grows well in zones five through nine. Likes full sun but can take shade better then other junipers. Great plant specimen draping over or in and around rocks or stones. Will grow around one foot high and can sprawl out five to nine feet. Great ground cover. Color is green with teal tones on the long needle like leaves.
- Stone Pathway to Landscaped Beds - Create a stone or brick pathway from your deck and patio to the center bed in your backyard. The path also comes off the deck steps and a walkway from your patio. You can still create the pathway even if you have just a deck or just a patio.
- Bird House - Two bird houses for the winter months. You could also include a couple of feeders and bird bath in this kidney shape bed.
- Carpet Rose - semi-evergreen shrub producing a variety of colors. Does well in zones five through ten. A favorite of many people due to its long blooming season. Will thrive in full sun but can do well in partial shade. Low growing about two to three feet high and spreads out to four to five feet. Not a high maintenance rose bush at all. I especially like this type of rose shrub because of the color variations and long bloom time.
- Black Dragon Cryptomeria - evergreen upright tree that can reach ten to twenty feet high and three to five feet wide. Great in zones five through nine. Soft needle shaped long leaves. A bright green color and this tree has an open airy feeling. Great for a backdrop in an open landscape garden. You can top this tree to keep the height down.
- Steed Holly - evergreen upright shrub. Grows great in zones six through nine. This Holly grows six to eight feet tall and three to four feet wide. It will take full sun or partial shade. Small clusters of leaves form through the branches. The new leaves take on a lighter green tone, making the shrub look two toned at different times of the year. A great shrub to put on either side of an entrance way into a garden, or on either side of your front porch. Nice also along the front of your home.
This is just one style of design for an open plan. You can substitute any tree, shrub and add annual or perennial flowers in any bed. Most people decide on phase planting and will start off by planting trees and then incorporate shrubs and flowers down the road. Planning your landscape area for you home is very important. Knowing the varieties available in your area and getting good quality plants are all necessary to ensure you and your family beautiful, healthy, and complete landscape gardens for your home.
