Hosta Gardens - A Delightful Landscape Feature

Hosta gardens are a great addition to any landscape area.

These attractive plants can grow in many different geographic locations. The plant is native in the northeast part of Asia, and some people say it probably originated in China.

Many people think the plant can only survive in warmer climates. Some varieties such as the Ventricosa will mature nicely in zones three through nine. The Ventricosa variety and others can take some sun in colder climates.

Shade Area For Hostas
In warmer climates this plant specie will need all shade or at least some partial shade. I have seen people put a full garden of just these plants in direct sun in the southern United States.

By mid summer the leaves are totally burned out. A good thing to think about is putting this type of garden around some trees.

This makes a wonderful area to plant a bed of this plant specimen. One of the most striking items of this plant is its large shiny leaves.

The plants have an average height of two to three feet and the width is about the same. Some varieties can be smaller or larger. A nice idea is to plant different sizes throughout this garden to create a natural and professional look.

The plant also looks great in rock gardens and open areas. Some large trees tend to have their root systems creep above ground.

Properly prepare the soil by turning the soil over. A tiller may work but due to the trees root system, you may have to do it by hand.

Prepare the ground before you consider planting any type of a garden. Create this garden project by outlining an area around the trees.

Draw a circle or do a kidney shape with a garden hose or landscape chalk. Always remember to put an odd number of plants in the bed. I have done this type of garden before and love the idea of adding solid and variegated plants.

In the gallery of plants section, there is a variety of different species that will compliment this plant family. Hosta blooms in the summer and has beautiful large stalks of different color flowers. Two of the most popular are the purple and white tones. Most of the plant species will die out in the winter months. In tropical locations the Hosta is an evergreen.

This type of garden can also be done in an open area, as long as there is shade. Surround the plants with accenting perennial flowers. Add a few evergreen shrubs or ground cover to have some green year around.

Make sure you properly place and plant the garden. Take a look at the picture above. It was taken from a natural style garden. There are a variety of this plant specimen along with flowers, Liriope, and other natural looking shrubs.

There are so many different types of Hostas gardens you can do.

This attractive garden was sent to me by Carla, a master gardener in Texas in the USA. This plant family creates a colorful atmosphere for any shaded area.
