In Mexico, Chichen Itza Is A Stunning Natural Architectural Landscape

In Mexico, one of the most unique natural landscapes lies in the Yucatan Peninsula. Chichen Itza is located right in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula. There are three major regions in this area. Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. For many of you that have never been to this natural wonder, Chichen Itza is about 124 miles or 200 kilometers west from Cancun. This entire area dates way back in history and is home to the Mayan people.

To give you a little background on the Mayan race, they settled in three large regions. Their first settlement was in the south part of Mexico, from the state of Campech down to Honduras. Later, they fled north to the states of Yucatan Peninsula and Quintana Roo. They also came to Chiapas and Tabasco. The entire Mayan territory was around 202,000 square kilometers. This area provides a distinct natural landscape of different species of vegetation and tropical climate. The mountain ranges offer cooler temperatures, while the central region has lush rain forests and sufficient rain. The diversity of these characteristics make this region a wonderful tropical destination.

Chichen Itza was a city where the Mayans built their temples, palaces and pyramids. Architects and landscapers are fascinated with the natural rock formations and all the artistry created within the different outside structures. There has been some structural restoration, but the beauty and history still lies within Chichen Itza. When walking through this ancient city, one gets a feeling of being back in the era. Almost every standing structure has a creative natural art form and meaningful symbolization to the Mayan race. These ruins are divided into the northern zone and the southern zone. Each zone consists of nine different elements that create this wonderful ancient city. I wanted to share some pictures of the different ruins that remain. They are an incredible natural wonder.

The entire area is around six miles. It is truly fascinating to think that these ruins were once hundreds of different unique buildings in Mexico. There are roads that run around these buildings and are the white roads of the Maya.

One of the most fascinating water features in this area of Mexico are the natural wells or Cenotes. The water supply for this entire area is provided by these natural wells. The water from the cenotes provide water for the people of the Yucatan Peninsula. There are many underground streams and rivers on the Yucatan Peninsula. The jungle is thick, but not very tall due to a relatively thin layer of soil. If you have never been to this part of Mexico, the plant specimens are vibrant and wonderful to view. Take a look at this cenote in Chichen Itza.

Chichen Itza is a unique place to get lost in time and a unique educational experience for any age. I debated whether to put this page in the learning center, as Mexico has a lot of anicent history and educational value. Either the tropics or the learning center is suitable for Chichen Itza. A wonderful aspect of this region is how today thousands of people visit yearly from all over the world. The climate is hot and dry and if this trip is taken during the summer months, bottled water is suggested for this excursion. I also recommend bringing a journal and write down some notes and take pictures to enjoy for your own memories. Chichen Itza represents the beautiful culture of the Mayans and how they built these ancient ruins. They told their history through creating pictures and writings in rocks in these magnificent buildings. Today these symbols of the Mayan ancestry are created throughout many resorts in the Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum areas. I have spent some time in these different locations and Chichen Itza really tells the story of the Mayan culture in Mexico. If you have been to Chichen Itza or any other special architectural ruin or landscape, feel free to share your story with others. This is a great way for others to experience a taste of history.
