owning my own off line landscape and design business has been one of the highlights of my life. It starts from the first
step of meeting with my clients on a consultation and listening to their needs. Each design and plan I did was
based on assessing an individual's desire to improve their outside investment, to take pride in it, and more
importantly, to enjoy it! I loved every aspect of planning, prepping and planting. One of the greatest joys
of doing the entire process was seeing client satisfaction as my crew and I pulled away from a client's property.
I enjoyed the big jobs at a new construction site, as well as putting down three scoops of mulch for an elderly
lady twice a year.
Another aspect I loved was being on the job site all the time with my crew. Many days I would come home
with more dirt on me than my crew. My two grown daughters would periodically see me and had two words,
"gross mom!" Alright, here goes. Yes, this is me holding a paycheck for one of my crew members.
This was actually a clean day for me.
In the year 2005 this wonderful passion and enjoyment of helping others with their landscape needs came to an end.
Due to age and bad knees, I was unable to continue the business. I remember New Years Eve of 2005, at the age of 50,
almost the stroke of midnight, taking my business signs off my truck with tears flowing down my face. The next year
I spent many hours trying to figure how I could take this passion of landscape and design and continue it to help
others.
In the beginning of the year 2007, I began to search the Internet. First I looked at jobs in my own area. I expended
to see what else was out there that I could do. The only thing I knew how to do on a computer was search the web
and e-mail my family and friends. I came across a site called, SiteSell, or Site Build It. I remember reading
all about the philosophy that Dr. Ken Evoy believed in. He stated how someone that had a passion for a hobby, an on
line or off line small business, could develop and build a website to share his or her story and knowledge with others.
He also explained that you didn't have to be computer savvy, as SBI provided the tools and all the technology for anyone
with a passion, knowledge, and desire to succeed in creating their very own website. The term we SBI'ers use is,
our own brand of one. In my landscape business daily I would live by these five words, positive focus,
self-motivation, reward. The beauty of SBI is the philosophy entails these same five words. A website cannot
be successful overnight. It takes hard work, a desire to help others, and to really enjoy what you are doing. Now
you may be thinking, "I cannot afford to give up my daily job to do something I really enjoy." Well, you don't
have to give up your daily job to build a website. Many SBI people work full time, and part time building their
website or sites. This is very common in our community.
