Your deck is a place of enjoyment and relaxation. Take
a particular color theme and plant different shrubs and
flowers.
These three colors are bright and warm. Of course
you can use any color combination, but I like these
three colors off of a wood structure as the wood highlights
the character of each plant specimen. This will also work
off a patio or porch.
This color theme garden is based on
a normal size decks. Some decks are built low to the ground
and others are higher due to the terrain.
Your plant specimens will vary in height and width with the size of the deck. Below is a simple design with different shrubs and flowers.
The focal point is yellow, with orange tones and of course green accenting the main color. When deciding on a main
color theme around your deck, always remember the other
tones of your house and any outdoor features.
Sea Green Juniper
Variegated Juniper
Kobold Barberry
Mop Cypress
Colorful Flowers
Pyracantha or Variegated Boxwood
Sea Green Juniper or Yew

All of these shrubs and flowers bring out spectacular
color and different textures to give a unique look around
your deck. The specific plant specimens above can
be used in a variety of geographic climates.
Here is
another article on
deck and patio gardens in which you could consider making yellow the focal point.
This color theme garden can also be done anywhere
on your property. I wanted to share with you some
photos of each of these plants so you can get a visual to
plan your plants around your deck, patio, or porch.
The
Sea Green Juniper is an evergreen shrub
that grows well in zones four through eight. There are
three of the Sea Green placed around back length of this
deck. It will grow four to six feet high and wide.
The
Variegated Juniper is a wonderful lower
growing evergreen that does well in zones four through
nine. It grows two to three feet high and three to four
feet wide. There are two of the variegated plants accenting
the back drop on either side of the Sea Green shrubs.
The
Kobold Barberry is deciduous shrub and does
well grow in zones four through nine. This shrub in the
fall develops orange berries and adds vibrant color
along the deck. All Barberries have rigid edges so
in pruning them, gloves should be worn. This shrub
is considered a dwarf and grows two feet to three
feet tall and two to three feet wide.
The
Mop Cypress is a favorite of many
people. The Mop grows three to four feet high and three
to four feet wide. The yellow and green needle like leaves
is a great accent to any garden. The texture of the leaves truly reminds
you of a mop. Great to grow in zones five through eight.
Notice how the Mop is placed next to the Barberry
for a precise contrast in color and texture.
Number five is on the corners of the length of the deck.
This is where you can have some fun with a variety of
flowers. Do mass plantings or just a triangle of three
Mums. These flowers grow well in zones four through
nine and produce different exuberant colors in the
fall season. Placing yellow in this area, creates
a warm feeling to offset the evergreen shrubs.
There are many different varieties of
Lantana.
This flower can do well in zones four through eight and
depending on the specie, will either die out in the winter
or if mulched well, can survive through warmer climate
winters. The multi color flowers gives you a wonderful
look. Combine yellow Mums and Lantana around the corners.
Here is a true multiple toned Lantana along with an
Orange Begonia. The Begonia is better suited
for warmer climates and does well in zones seven and
eight. They also make wonderful indoor plants. Putting
Begonias throughout the deck area is another option.
When doing a yellow and orange base theme garden, one
has to think about planting some
Lilies.There
are many different Lily specimens available today
with a wide variety of colors. Lilies also can grow in
zones three through nine and their spring and summer
colors adds so much to any deck area. Think also about
combining all the flowers into a multi mass planting on
the corners.
The
Pyracantha is a unique plant specimen
and grows well in zones six through nine. It is known
for its thorny feel but can be kept pruned and trained
to be an eloquent plant specimen.
Many people like
the Pyracantha on a trellis. You can train the branches to
flow up along the trellis. The orange - red tone berries
blossom in the winter months. This is an evergreen shrub.
The Pyracantha is a good option for the middle of each
side of the deck.
The
Variegated Boxwood is an older
evergreen shrub that grows well in zones four through eight.
The yellow and green tone leaves keep right in the flow of this
theme based garden. The Variegated Boxwood does well in full
sun or can take part shade.
If you notice, I used the possibility of the
Sea
Green Juniper again for the sides of the deck.
The idea is to give the entire area a more
uniform look. Adding a couple more Sea Greens
on the sides will balance out the entire area.
The
Yew has a soft evergreen look.
This shrub can grow in zones five through nine.
The Yew can grow up to fifteen to twenty feet tall
but the smaller versions grow two to four feet
high and two to four feet wide. This is a great accent
plant with all your other colors and textures.
Taking a group of
different shrubs and flowers and placing them
throughout your landscape bed, will deliver a
wonderful look to your front or backyard.
Using the
dominant colors of yellow and orange can truly accent
any new or existing home. I hope this has given you some ideas for around
your deck, patio or porch.
