aborvitea dilema

My husband and I planted an aborvitae next to the house to protect it while it was young,12" tall, and had intentions of moving it into some landscape... well 20 years have passed and it is now 20 feet tall and right next to the house. I was working around it and thinking of "bonsai-ing" it to give some flare to the landscape that we are just now working on and then had a few concerns. 1. can this be done? Can I pull the top toward the ground and stake it and hope that it will continue to grow in this new way after 20 years of being upright? 2. The root system, how big, deep, mass are the roots on a tree this big? not only is this trunk within 2 feet of the corner of the house, it is about 20 feet from the septic tank. Is this a potenetial problem and are we better off to just cut it down at this point?

Arborvitae Close To House
by: Kimberly

Hi Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Arborvitae.

I am concerned with the age of the Arborvitae. This specimen is very mature. I wouldn't recommend making the Arborvitae into a Bonsai form. The needle leaves are soft and flexable. I think it would be hard to hold its shape.

There are a few things you can consider. One is to prune back the Aborvitae. You can top it off and also prune back the entire specimen.

Another option is to dig around the base of the tree and loosen the dirt. This mature specimens roots are well established and wouldn't move that well.

Another option is to cut down the tree. With the roots being established, I might consider hiring out if you don't have a pick up truck and chains. My crew and I removed established shrubs and trees with my truck and chains. Your goal is to make sure you get the tap root or mother root completely out.

If you still want the specimen in its present location, my recommendation is to prune back, with a little shaping. I hope this helps and if you need further help with your Arborvitae let me know. The best of luck to you and let us know how you make out. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day. Feel free anytime to ask a question.
