About my Cleveland Pear Tree...

I have aprox. 7 ft tall Cleveland Pear tree I bought last fall. It is still in the pot it came in as I did not get it planted before winter came. So I have kept it in our cool basement all winter by the outside door so it could have some daylight. About 3 weeks ago it started to bud and then immediately came out the leaves and now they are fully open and the smaller limbs are growing. It is way too early for the weather here but being always above freezing I guess the tree feels like it is living in a different climate than it will be eventually. This is in northeast Ohio. Also I kept it watered well over the winter. I will not plant it until all chances of frost are over. My question is why did the tree not flower first? There were no signs of any blossoms. Any advice about caring for this tree? It had fall pretty-colored leaves on it when I got it. It appears healthy.

About Your Cleveland Pear Tree
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your seven foot Cleveland Pear tree.

Congratulations on the great care you have given this Cleveland Pear tree throughout the winter months. It sounds like you have done everything right to keep this tree healthy.

The reason your tree developed leaves and blossoms is due to the age of the tree and where it came from. Most likely it was shipped into where you bought it last fall.

Most growers will grow trees in the ground in their location and ship them out. You had the right environment for the Cleveland to grow at it's normal rate. Here in upstate South Carolina the Cleveland Pears have their leaves and will be blooming in the next month. For now, keep doing what are doing, and put outside when the last chance of frost has gone by.

Once this has happened, plant your Cleveland Pear. You most likely won't get blooms outside this year. You will have to watch out for possible stress when you plant. Make sure your prepare your ground properly. I recommend putting some organic mushroom in the soil and in the hole. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. Get on a good watering schedule. Great job at keeping this Cleveland Pear a live throughout the winter months in Northeast Ohio. Let us know how your tree is doing once you get it into the ground. If you have any problems, feel free to ask right here.

Thanks again for asking the question, and the best of luck to you. Have a great evening.
Kimberly
