abvorita tree

I have had these aborvita trees for 12 years they are tall and beautiful but one is now turning brown and loosing its greenery on the bottom and this is now continuing up the tree. Why is this and how can I stop this and save the tree? I live in PA.

Aborvita or Aborvitae Tree
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Aborvita or Arborvitae trees. This can be a common problem with the Arborvia tree during the winter months, especially established trees.

You are in Pennsylvania and I imagine there is snow on the ground. The snow will insulate the tree. Your ground is also probably frozen. Even though the Arborvitae is an evergreen, it will pretty much dormant in the colder weather.

I have seen this problem before and living in upstate South Carolina, we do get some cold weather from time to time.

The tree may be lacking some nutrients, but it is not uncommon for the Arborvita to have brown in the colder months. If the tree looks like it is spliting in the center, I would recommend staking it. Often, you will see brown in the middle first. Since your tree started with brown at the bottom and the brown is working up the tree, it may be what is called, "winter shock" even though it is established. If you can dig around the base and loosen the dirt, I would recommend a small amount of organice mushroom compost. Water the tree after adding the mushroom compost. This may give the tree a boost until spring.

I don't think it has a disease. If you were in the warmer months, it might.

From what you said all the Arborvitas have been healthy. I really think this is a winter stress on the tree.

Thanks for asking the question and let us know what happens. Good luck with your Arborvita and have a great day!
Kimberly
