All the grass in my back yard died gradually over the years despite frequent fertilizing, pest treatment and watering. Now my yard is nothing but weeds. What do I need to do, cost effectively, to have a yard with grass? No plants will grow in the yard either.

Hi Donna:
This is landscape solutions website. I reviewed your question and saw the comment which was excellent! I would probably recommend at this time to till the entire lawn. Rake and level it out and then overseed, fertilize with a six month slow release nitrogen fertilizer. If you can, stay on a good watering schedule. You could do the raise beds around your trees to add a nice touch. For now, focus on getting the grass growing again.

You can opt to do this now in the fall or next spring as I am not sure your time schedule for being back in your home.

Dead grass

Yes, I do have trees in my yard. Though due to Hurricane Rita I have fewer now. They were huge pine trees. The trees fell on my house. I am not living there right now, but they are working on my house. I was going to clean up the back yard (stumps removed, 2 other pine trees removed, hangers removed, etc) but the problems with growing grass, etc in my yard predates Rita.

Do you have a lot of trees in your yard? Sometimes this can be a cause why you cannot grow plants or grass. You can put a weed killer down and wait a week and then bring some top soil in and spread it around your yard. You can then overseed, fertilize and water and try again. Maybe consider doing landscape beds through the yard and try a little bit of grass. If you do landscape beds then raise your beds up with at least 4 to 6 inches of good top soil. I don't think cement would be an option so maybe think about doing these few things. Good luck to you.
