Apple tree roots and how deep they grow

by Gabrielle Bill

Apple tree roots. My husband is digging up the garden and chopping a lot of the apple tree roots off. Will it survive this is my question? Many thanks.

Apple Tree Roots And How Deep Do They Grow
by: Kimberly

Hi Gabrielle, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Apple Tree roots.

There are a number of different types of Apple trees. The root systems do go down into the ground. With any tree, you will have a tap or mother root. This is the main root of any tree specimen. This is the one root your husband shouldn't cut.

The tap or mother root is a bigger root. I would recommend if possible for you husband as he is preparing your garden, to see if he can find out where the tap root is underneath the soil.

If he has chopped off some roots, there may be damage to the tree. I am not sure how old the tree is, how big, and what type.

Once he is done prepping the garden, wait a couple of weeks and have him do the scratch test on a branch or two. Take a sharp knife and scratch the surface. If the branch is green, you should be fine. If the branch is turning brown, it could be in shock.

Your main goal once the garden area is prepped, is to wait and see how the Apple tree adapts to some of its roots being cut. You may also have a change in growth pattern and producing fruit.

Thanks again Gabrielle for asking the question. Let us know how your Apple tree is doing. Feel free to ask a question anytime. The best of luck to you.
Kimberly
