Asphalt driveway vs cherry trees

by Mildred
(Portage County Ohio)

I have a neighbor whose driveway abuts our property. She claims the cherries from our wild cherry tree are destructive to her asphalt driveway. True/False.

Asphalt Driveway Versus Cherry Trees
by: Kimberly

Hi Mildred, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Cherry Trees and your neighbor's asphalt driveway.

Thank you Morton for also giving your thoughts.

Cherry Trees are not really considered invasive, but do have large root systmes. The wild Cherry berries and leaves are poisonous to some animals and bird species. They are also can be disease prone. The berries can also stain as well.

To answer your question is of true or false, no the roots are not invasive but the other issues I mentioned above may have some influence on what you decide to do. Like Morton said, you may want to prune back the branches to ensure your neighbor that no berries fall onto their driveway.

One of the issues also with the Cherry trees is if they are removed, the entire stump has to be taken out. The reason to this is that new growth will appear as suckers on the stump and you will have scrub trees. I don't think you will have to remove the trees, but pruning may be your best solution.

I am not sure how far the Cherry trees are from the driveway, but check the ground from the trunk of the Cherry to his or her driveway. See if there are any roots ground level. This may help you understand where the actual bigger roots are.

I hope this helps some and the best of luck to you. Let us know how you make out. Thanks again Mildred for asking the question and thanks for your response Morton. Have a great day.

Cherries
by: Morton

Not sure about destructive abilities of a cherry but root system CAN cause problems.I live in South Island of New Zealand, a little sou east of Australia. If approach by a neighbour in a reasonable manner, over an issue like this I would do what I could to mitigate, like pruning branches that over hang boundry etc however if they were being hard nosed I could be less than convivial
