Back yard options?

This area is approx. 50 ft wide by 40 ft long and totally blank except for the back fence line. We want to leave the existing trees because they block the evening sun from blinding us when we are sitting on our back porch. I'd like to create an area that gives the feel of being somewhere other than on a small city lot. We are planning to put a small pond in the right corner and some sort of seating area or rustic type gazebo in the left corner. Any suggestions? We are in zone 5.

This is Kimberly. I like the idea of a small pond and sitting area. Sugestions for rest of area:
1. In front of existing trees, add a straight or staggered row of evergreen trees. This will give more privacy year around.

2. Consider putting a big kidney shape bed as your main focal point in the center of the backyard.

3. Add some different shaped beds around the kidney shape to accent the main bed.

3. Plant grass or do sod in the rest of the area, or create pathways connecting the beds and outdoor features.

Terri - I would be happy to give you suggestions on plant materials to use in your zone as well as a more detailed design. Just let me know through this website.

Good luck to you and thank you for contributing.
