What is the best way to prevent bark beetles from spreading from and infected pine or cedar tree to a nearby healthy tree?

A website on bark beetles says Onyx spray and Talspar are effective against bark beetles. Onyx is more concentrated and sells for about $200 a quart plus S&H and tax if you order it.

Bark Beetle Problem
by: Kimberly

Hi Don, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your bark beetle problem.

The bark beetles can be very frustrating for home owners. I have had clients with the same problems. Most herbicides won't work on bark beetles.

There are a couple of things you can do. One is to see if repellent pheromones is available in your area.

I would recommend to you that you prune all infested branches and limbs. It is very important that you immediately remove the branches and discard them in a safe place. You will want to check the trunks to see if the bark beetles have invaded it. If they have, it is important that you remove the entire tree before they spread to your healthy trees.

If you have woodpeckers in the area, they will help with the bark beetles, but not control them. I hope this helps some and let us know how you make out. Your main objective is to remove all infested branches and limbs. Cut them at an angle so you won't further damage the specimens. Good luck to you. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day.
Kimberly
