Base of Cleveland Pear Tree

by Justin hess

I planted a Cleveland Pear tree 3 years ago and it is doing great. However, I went to go pull the weeds out near the base of the tree and it appears that they might be part of the tree. I cut them back and they keep coming. Is this a normal problem and is there anything I can do about it?

Hi Justin,
Thanks for responding. Unfortunately in landscaping and plants, suckers are part of a specimen. I would recommend to prune the suckers every few months or so. It is more work on you, but if you try to kill off the suckers, you could harm the tree. Best of luck to you. Thanks again.

Kim,
Thank you for the informative and timely response. I do think that will handle the weeds but I think I have some "suckers" or extension of the trees root system above ground. Is there any way to stop these other than pruning every couple of months? Thanks again and I will go try some weed killer that you mentioned.

Hi Justin, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on the weeds around your Cleveland Pear tree.

The weeds have gotten well established in the ground. You will want to buy an herbicide that is safe to apply around trees. There are many different brands available today at local chain stores or garden shops.

Make sure the product says safe for trees and plants. You can apply the herbicide and let it work for up to one week. Remove the dead weeds. You may have to ad another application if all the weeds are dead. This should take care of the weed problem around your Cleveland Pear.

Let us know how you make out with the weed problem. Thanks again Justin for asking the question and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day and a safe 4th of July weekend.
Kimberly
