Brown leaves on Japanese Pencil Holly

I planted two Japanese Pencil Holly into our landscape about six weeks ago. They seemed to be doing well at first, even though it was exceptionally hot and dry for the first four weeks. I watered them ever every day, but now the inside branches are dry and almost dead looking. They have brown leaves that fall off to the touch. The outer surface branches and leaves are healthy looking. Did I not give them enough water? Do I prune out the dead looking parts? I hate to lose them. They were extremely healthy and about 4ft. tall when we planted. Any help would be appreciated!

Brown Leaves On Japanese Pencil Holly
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on the brown leaves on your Japanese Pencil Holly.

It sounds like the shrubs are in shock. To be sure, take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface of a couple of branches. If the bark is green they are still alive. If the branches are brown, the shrubs are in shock.

Did you add organic mushroom compost when you planted? This is a great organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. If you haven't and the shrubs are in shock, loosen the dirt around the plants and add some compost. Water the plants slowly with a hose to make sure you get the root systems good and wet. This should help if in shock.

Thanks again for asking the question and let us know how you make out. Feel free to ask anytime. Hope you have had a great day!
Kimberly
