Can I Grow these plants indoors?? Yellow Alder & blue Philippean violet

by Peggy
(Houston, TX)

I have 3 medium sized Blue Philippean Violets that I have been growing in the same container for the last 3 years and I have a couple of questions about growing this:

1. Does anyone know about the root system for the Philippean violet and if it needs a lot of room in a pot to grow? Do the roots get crowded? Should I split the plant into separate pots?

2. I currently live in Houston, TX and I am moving to Connecticut at the end of October and I would like to bring this with me and grow it indoors. Can this be done? And if so,can I get some tips on doing so? Will it still bloom?

3. I also have Yellow Alder, which I don't think will be as difficult to maintain indoors in Connecticut, but if anyone has any advice or tips for me, I would appreciate it.

Yellow Alder
by: Micki33040

Yellow Alder is considered a weed or garden thug by many nurseries. It thrives in just about any type of soil and most lighting conditions. It can be propagated by seeds or cutting. It does not like having it's roots bothered and transplanting may cause it to go into transplant shock and die. If you are going to transplant it, it is best done by planting the seeds or cuttings in a peat pot and put the entire thing in the ground. Make sure it is where you want it or forever hold yoiur piece.

It tolerates growing in containers very well and does not seem to mind being root bound. I have mine in containers so I can move them around as needed or if they get too tall I can move them to the background of the garden. Yellow alders can become leggy and staking may be required. As the plant grows, trim the side growth back 1/3 to 1/2 to encourage it to bush out. An interesting note: a tincture made from the leaves and bark of the yellow alder has shown to be useful in treating MRSA.

Yelllow Alder and Blue Philippine Vilot
by: Kimberly

Hi Peggy, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the questions on your Yellow Elder Tree and the Blue Philippine Vilot. Both of these species are tropical plants that will require sunlight.

The Yellow Elder tree will need a good size container to grow in. I don't recommend doing anything with these plants until you move, and get them in your new environment. If you have a good size container that the Elder is already in, put the plant in an indoor sunny location if you can, once you move. The soil should be a sand base with some linme. Just watch for any stress in its new environment. Water as you have been doing.

The Philippine Vilot needs well drained and rich soil. If you need to transplant it, make sure you get a light weight potty soil that contains humus and vermiculite. This will help in its growth and also new environment.

The main aspect with both of these plant specimens is to watch for stress, put in sunny location, water properly, and transplant if needed.

I hope this helps and best of luck to you with your move and also your Elder Tree and Philippine Violet. Thanks again Peggy for asking the question, and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day and let us know how you make out with these two plants.
Kimberly
