Cherry Tree Dying

by Barry
(Knoxville, Tennessee)

I have about 6 cherry trees (pink) planted along a drive by my house. They are about 8 years old. All of them seem to be thriving but within the last 3 months, one looks as if it is beginning to die. A couple of small limbs are dead. Leaves are yellowing and turning up. I have fertilized it, and I water it 2-3 times weekly. I have sprayed it for insects. Do you have any other ideas I might try? Thanks.

Dying Weeping Cherry
by: Kimberly

Hi Barry, landscape solutions website here. Morton had a great response in getting a professional to look at your tree. Many landscapers will do a free consultation.

You may also want to consider taking a dying or dead branch to your local nursery or garden center. They may be able to identify your problem. I would recommend to cut back the watering. Your trees are established and even though zone seven, where you live has been dry, they don't need that much watering. This could be one reason your leaves are turning yellow.

Take a small knife or your fingernail and scratch the surface of a branch or trunk. If it is green, the tree is still alive. If it is brown, it is in shock. Everyone once in awhile, an established tree will get hit with a fungus or disease.

Let us know how you make out with the Weeping Cherry tree, and feel free to commit anytime on landscape solutions website. Hope your tree survives.

Cherry Trees
by: Morton

Its really hard to guess whats up here, as it appears other trees are ok
I would suggest getting a qualified Nurseryman or Landscaper to have a look at the tree and its situation and anyother local issues that may be affecting this tree
I am in New Zealand so unfortunately cant pop over and have a look
I love the cherry and have two flowering varietys
amd in previous place had 5 Prunus shirotae (Mt Fuji) along one side of a long driveway
