clay soil privacy hedges/shrubs all die

by susan
(collinsville, OK, USA)

in OK, we tried a dozen of Emerald Green Aborvitaes- they all died- took them back to Lowes- they had a 1 yr warranty- got them all replaced- added bagged garden soil and compost to each planting hole, 2x size of pots- replanted them all- they all died again. we gave up. The lot we have is heavy clay and rock. You can only amend the soil so far down, the clay does not drain well, so when it rains, the water is pooled for couple of days before it dries out, then it dries rock hard. This north side of lot has 3 small poplar trees, and more poplars along back property line on east side. 1 by 1 we have lost the smaller of these as well, only larger poplars remain. (these were already planted by previous owner) I am trying to plant anything that will serve as a windbreak, its very windy there, and tall enough to be privacy hedge as well. I'm about ready to build a stone wall LOL, but would rather see some pretty greenery and wish upon wish flowers too.

French Drains and Contractor
by: Kimberly

Hi Susan, Kimberly here again. Thanks for responding. Hire your contractor first and get your ground leveled correctly. Once this is done, look at where there are low spots and possibly problem areas. A French drain will work but also the corrugated piping if diverted away from the plant specimens.

Here is a page on the site that talks about dry rock beds. Thanks for responding and keep us up to date.

Thanks, yes we have a tiller, but have plans to put in french drains or get contractor to come in a relevel the lot.. or probabaly both! Ok, we'll get the drainage pipes in first.. curious about the rock beds though? havent seen that done much around here, but I have a few other problem wet areas close to house may be good for, and look good too..?

Clay Soil
by: Kimberly

Hi Susan, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on clay soil and tree problem. Having lived in Oklahoma for a couple of years and now living in South Carolina, I totally understand about your clay soil.

A question for you, did you prep the ground before hand, working the soil the best you could? With all the jobs my crew and I have done, we run a tiller over and over the area to loosen the soil. If this has been done already, there are a couple of other options.

One is to put in corrugated piping to try and divert the water away from the trees and shrubs. The other is to create raised beds. You can bring in good quality top soil with a mixture of sand, light weight dirt, and saw dust. (if possible) Use organic mushroom compost and work the compost throughout the soil. Also add the mushroom compost to the holes before putting in trees or shrubs. The Emerald Green Arborvitae should grow in your region. I do understand your frustration though.

Some ideas of plants -
1. Liles - they love water - there are a wide variety available. The Lilies could go in front of your shrubs.
2. Leyland Cypress
4. Variegated Ligustrum
5. Carolina Sapphire
6. Black Dragon Cryptomeria

You can plant smaller shrubs in front of the trees-
1. Chinese Pizazz
2. Mop Cypress
3. Indian Hawthorn

I don't want to go overboard, but I think if you add the right ingredients and really work the land, you will get your wind shield. If you would like to know more about the corrugated pipes, feel free to ask right here. You could also build a dry rock bed to divert the water away from the trees. The dry rock bed also is decorative in your landscape.

I hope this helps some and thanks again for asking here at landscape solutions for you. Let us know how you make out. Have a great evening.
Kimberly
