Dill Disappearing
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thanks for asking the question on your dill disappearing.

This is a great question and one that is complex to answer. As a professional landscaper and designer, as well as nature lover, the Shallowtail butterfly is a wonderful specimen for butterfly gardens. Unfortunately the Shallowtail's favorite food is dill, fennel, parsley, and most herbs.

The eggs can be very hard to see. You do have a couple of options. I am not sure if your dill is in a container garden or ground garden. You can put a chemical on the plants to kill off the eggs.

Personally I wouldn't do that. I would consider building a butterfly garden around the dill with different flowering shrubs, perennial, or annual flowers. This is just a thought depending on your space.

You can also consider planting your dill and any other herbs you may have in containers that can be protected from the Shallowtail butterfly and laying their eggs. This is a tough call to make.

I can understand your frustration as you are seeing your dill disappear. Think about the different options and let us know. If you have more questions on the shallowtail butterflies or any other question, feel free to ask. Thanks again for asking the question, and the best of luck to you. Have a great day.
Kimberly
