Dying Cedar

by Donna
(Jasper, GA)

I was given a potted cedar and is in very bad shape. It has browned and has little green on it. I was told it was root bound so I panted in the yard and added vigoro 10-8-8 plant food to the potting mix. I also dug to hole deeper and wider than the container it was in. I water it every couple of days. It is only about 3 1/2 to 4 ft. high. It has only been about a month since it was planted and I really want to save this tree. Is there anything else I should be doing and how will I notice if I have helped this poor tree and approx. how long will it take for me to see a difference? Planted in North GA. and in august. Thanks for any info.

Dying Cedar
by: Kimberly

Hi Donna, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. I am sorry I haven't responded to your question. I have been on vacation and just returned. Thank you for asking the question on your dying Cedar.

If you haven't found the answer yet, I would recommend you scratch the surface of a branch or two and see if it is green. You can do this with a small sharp knife. If there is any green, the Cedar is still alive. If it is brown, the Cedar is definitely in shock. From the photo you sent, it looks like the Cedar is struggling. If you got the Cedar from a local nursery, check and see if there is a warranty on the plant. If not, you could loosen the dirt and put some organic mushroom compost into the ground. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year. If you think the Cedar has a chance to survive, take a hose and slow drip around the entire base of the plant. Keep the hose about ten minutes in one spot and then move it around. This may help.

Let us know how you make out and good luck. Once again, I am sorry for taking so long to answer this question. Thanks again for asking the question and have a great day.
Kimberly
