This is Mildred. She used to be a small but healthy dwarf English boxwood. Her leaves recently began to dry, brown, and eventually fall off. The few leaves she has left are now in very poor condition.

Can she be saved? What can I do to help her?

Thank you for your help.

Dying English Boxwood
by: Kimberly

Hi Aimee, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your dying dwarf English Boxwood. Thanks also for sending the photo.

From the picture it looks as there is a little new growth of the shrub. You will need to do the scratch test. Take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface of a branch. If the branch has some green in it, it is still alive. If the branch is brown, the plant is definitely in stress.

A couple of questions for you? Have you recently changed out the soil in the pot? Are you on a regular watering schedule? Container plants need to be watered more than ground plants. Have you recently pruned the branches?

Here are some tips for you to do.

1. If you have recently pruned back, the plant could go through a shock period. This is also true if you recently put new soil in the pot. I would recommend if you have done either of these to add some mushroom compost to the soil. I also recommend using a light weight potting soil with humus and vermiculite in the soil. Great combination for container plants.

2. If the soil is old, change it out with the advice above. You can also add some liquid plant food to the soil. Give the dwarf English Boxwood a chance to revitalize itself and see in the next two weeks what happens.

Please feel free to respond back to us so we can better understand if you have recently pruned, change soil, etc...

Thanks again Aimee for asking the question and look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day.
Kimberly
