Evergreen for a shady area

by Matt

I'd like to put in an evergreen bush/small tree next to the house - something that will be about 4 or 5 feet tall. This spot is under a large tree and receives very little direct sun when there are leaves on the large tree. Also it needs to be something that deer will not eat. Location is western PA. Any suggestions?

Small Evergreen Tree For Shady Area
by: Kimberly

Hi Matt, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on a small tree for your shady area. You live in zone six and here are a few options to think about.

1. Oregon Grape Holly - does well in colder winters - will grow three to six feet. There are other Hollies you could consider also.

2. Mountain Laurel will grow also in your zone. They will take full shade and grow 7 to 15 feet.

3. Rhododendron - different varieties will grow over six feet. Great color and if you want which ones, I would be happy to go into detail for you.

4. Pieris Japonica - beautiful evergreen that will bloom in early spring in your zone. Grows from 3 to 12 feet.

5. Barberry - evergreen that will grow 6 to 8 feet.

5. Boxwood - different varieties grow 3 to 9 feet.

6. Arborvitae - Degroots - if you have any part shade this is a great evergreen that will work in your area. Will vary in maturity, but can grow up to 15 feet. You can top this off.

These are just a few that come to mind. If you would like more suggestions or need any details, feel free to ask right here. Thanks again Matt for asking your question on an evergreen small tree for a shady area. I hope this helps and have a great weekend.
Kimberly
