Evergreen Tree

We have an area on the side of our yard where water drains down into a man made lake. This area is wide enough to plant trees or bushes but is always soggy after rain and has standing water frequently. I had large Holly bushes planted but they died because of the water situation. Would a particular type of evergreen tree or another type of bush survive in this area? I would like to have a fast growing tree or plant that would provide privacy.

Thanks for your Assistance

Evergreen Tree For Soggy Area
by: Kimberly

Hi Patrica, Kimberly here at landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your problem area in your yard.

The most important thing you need to do now is divert the water from the area you would like to plant. Most plant specimens will not do well in your situation with soggy conditions. Their roots will mostly likely rot out. I would recommend to put some corrugated pipes along the area and divert the water away. Prepare a ditch and lay the piping in. I would also recommend solid corrugated pipes. You can lay stone around the pipes and cover with dirt. A french drain is also possible or a drain box. You can purchase any of these materials at major chain stores or garden centers.

I wouldn't plant any evergreens until you knew that water problem was taken care of. Once you divert the water, and depending what climate zone you live in, look at Leyland Cypress or Emerald Green Arborvitae. Both are evergreens and fast growers.

Let us know how you make out and the best of luck to you. Thank you again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you, and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
