Filling backyard

by Malay Kumar
(Shirley, MA)

Hi,
I have a very steep slope in my backyard and getting 500 yard of fill put in there. As far as fill material is concerned it is now too late to decide because have already given the job. The contractor is going to put material that he is excavating from a hill to make road. First of all did I made a wrong decision to get it filled by that? Second of all how much loam should I put on top of that? Should I be putting some other material before screened loam? Please advice.

Fill Dirt
by: Kimberly

Hi Malay, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on the fill dirt going on the slope.

As a landscaper, my first question would be, has the landscaper set a date for filling in your slope? I would call him as soon as you can and talk to him about it. Ask what type of fill he plans on putting along the slope, how deep, and his secure method so there won't be wash out.

The loam soil is light weight and a good soil. If you are planning on planting on the slope, which can be done, you will need four to six inches in depth of the loam soil. You can also purchase Jute, which is a heavy duty burlap landscape fabric that will hold your plants in place.

My recommendation is to contact the landscaper and talk to him about the questions I mentioned above. Make sure all your concerns and questions are answered before he or she begins the process. This is part of your outside investment.

Dirt fill is common when you are trying to build a slope area. I have done fill before but will always add a good quality soil on the top. I hope this helps and let us know how you make out.

Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day and if you need anymore help with this question or any other outdoor project, feel free to contact me.
Kimberly
