Front yard taken over by Maple tree roots

by MeL
(Toronto, ON, Canada)

My front yard consists of a 13x17ft patch of grass. I would like to turn it into a flower garden but it's also taken over by roots from the Maple tree on the boulevard. What I was thinking was that I would have to dig down, get rid of the grass and roots, line it, fill it back in with fresh soil and then I could start planting. But here are my questions:

How deep do I dig?
Do I have to line it and if so, with what?
What do I do with the grass and dirt waste? Who do I call to take it away?

Thanks! MeL

Grass and Maple Tree Roots
by: Kimberly

Hi Mel, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question.

Many people have the same problem that you are having with Maple and other tree roots.

I would recommend you purchase some grass killer and apply in the area. (this won't damage roots or other plants) Let it work for five to seven days. Once the grass is deas, remove it by racking. If it is too much and you can't put it in bags or remove it, hire someone with a pick up or trailer and have it removed.

Level the area out. You will want to make a raised bed. Add good quality top soil. You can raise the bed four to six inches. If you are going around the Maple tree, make sure you don't put the soil right against the trunk of the tree. You can purchase landscape fabric as an option. This will help hold down weeds. Plant your shrubs or flowers, and add mulch, pine straw, or decorative rocks. You may want to add a border to help hold the dirt in. My crew and I have done raised garden beds many times.

I hope this helps, and here is a page in the outdoor features section about raised beds. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day and let us know how you make out. Feel free to ask anytime.
