by Ed
(Venice,Fl,USA)

My Crotons got hit bad during the past frost in central Florida. I cut the back beginning of March to 12 inches. When will I see new growth. All I see is old leaves.

Croton

Hi Ed, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Croton plant. My husband and I were down in Fort Myers in January and experienced a week of extremely cold temperatures in Florida. I know there have been more.

The Croton is one of the beautiful specimens in your area. Now that you have pruned back the Croton, it will take a little time for new growth to appear. Your ground temperature dipped below normal throughout the end of December through now. Once the ground and air temperature gets back to normal, you should begin to see new growth. If you don't, check a branch or two to see if the shrub is in shock.

Take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface. If the branch is green, it is alive. If the branch is brown, the shrub is in distress and shock.

Crotons once established in the ground can usually withstand some cold temperatures. It may take a little time for new growth to appear. In the meantime, keep up the water requirements and consider adding an organic fertilizer to the soil around the plant. I recommend organic mushroom compost. It will send nutrients to the root system and promote new growth.

I hope this has helped some and let us know how your Croton makes out. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime and have a great day.
Kimberly
