frost in Sarasota, FL and croton damage

by Ellen
(Sarasota, FL)

Should I cut the Croton hedges drastically?

All three hedges are brown all the way down...should I cut down on-third or take it down further? Will they come back?

Croton Damage
by: Kimberly

Hi Ellen, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your croton plants. I am glad you asked, as my husband and I were down in Fort Myers visiting my dad the week of the cold weather and frost. I watched the tropical plants throughout the week as the temperatures dipped down to freezing and below.

With your Croton, if it is young, it could have damage. If it is an established plant I don't recommend pruning right now. Wait until spring or consistant warmer temperatures at night time. You will then hopefully see new growth. If you see new growth and have dead leaves or branches, prune them back the dead ones at this time.

Many sub-tropicals and tropical plants can withstand a cold snap. It also has to do with the ground temperature and moisture level.

I hope this has helped and thanks again for asking your question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great evening. Please feel free to keep us updated on your Croton plants.
Kimberly
