gerber daisy

by Teri McTavish
(Stouffville, Ontario, Canada)

I have planted Gerber daisies in the garden and they are doing better than the ones in the pots. Can i keep these garden daisies in the garden all winter, or do I have to dig them up and bring them in? I live in Ontario Canada. The plants that are in the pots can I put them in the garden now? Will they survive the winter or should I bring them into the house and winterize them? If so, how do I do that?
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Gerber Daisies
by: Kimberly

Hi Teri, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking the question on your Gerber Daisies in your pots and in the ground.

There are a couple of things you can do. I would bring your container Gerber Daisies inside for the colder months. Don't plant them into the ground until next spring. When you bring the pot daisies in, change the soil out. Make sure you have a big enough container. Use a light weight potting soil with some humus and vermiculite. Keep the soil moist and make sure daisies have the right amount of sunlight. The pot daisies should do fine throughout your winter months if in the right inside environment. I do this a lot with plants that are tempermental to our cool but mild winters here in the southeastern United States.

As far as your ground daisies, if they are well established, leave them in the ground. You can mulch around them to protect them some from the cold. If they were recently planted, you can dig them up and put them in container the same way as above suggestions. Gerber daisies are considered perennials. Your outside daisies will go dormant but with a little protection, will pop up again next spring.

I hope this has helped you some and good luck with your daisies. Thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feell free to ask anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
