Grey Sided Bungalow with deep veranda

by Kath
(Canada)

We are having built a 1600 sq. ft. gray sided bungalow that has an attached double car garage with a paved driveway on a 72 ft. by 155 ft. lot in Muskoka Ontario. The house has 5 steps up leading to a deep front porch that covers 3/4 of the front of the house and has white railings. The trim is white, 2 large white pillars framing the black front door, which is in the centre of the house.

I would like low maintenance flowering bushes and perennials. What would you suggest that would look nice for a home that faces south? The front yard is about 20 ft. in length by 45 ft. across.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Planting Shrubs And Flowers Along Your Bungalow
by: Kimberly

Hi Kath, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the questions on different flowering shrubs and flowers you could plant along the front of your verdana and bungalow. Sounds like a wonderful project and one you will enjoy for years to come.

In your zone of 4b there are some flowering shrubs you can use. I have a feeling you may get cold winters with snow. What your goal is to make sure the ground is properly prepped before you plant. All soil should be angled away from the bungalow so you don't have any water problems. Here are a few suggestions that come to mind.
I assume you will be getting some sun if not a lot of sun during the day.

1. Viburnum
2. Clethra
3. Some Azalea varieties
4. Spirea
5. Northeren Lights Ornamental Grass
6. Possibly Indian Hawthorn
7. Variety of smaller Junipers
8. Cypress- Mop is a great variegated yellow and green shrub.
9.Dwarf Hemlock - evergreen that would look awesome with flowering shrubs.
10. Small variety of Lilacs or flowering Quince

Some Flowers -

1. Honeysuckle
2. Gerber Daisies
3. Hollyhocks
4. Petunias
5. Columbine

You can also considered some flowering herbs, both ornamental and culinary. Many herbs will grow in your climate setting. Consider also putting a couple of decorative containers with herbs or flowers in them along the front. Incorporate them within the bed with other ground species.

I hope this gives you a few ideas for your bungalow. Let me know if you need other suggestions. The best of luck to you with your building and landscaping. Thank you again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day and feel free to ask a question anytime. If anyone else has more suggestions for Kath, that would be great.
Kimberly
