Hibiscus winter blues

by Jen Brougham
(Virginia)

I have a hibiscus tree that produces beautiful flowers. I had to move it inside because the winters here are too cold for it. I moved it indoors to a sunny spot. Since then, it's shed almost all it's leaves and I'm afraid it's just not going to make it through the winter.

Does anyone have any suggestions on cheering up my hibiscus so I can get it through the next few months? Thanks!!

Hibiscus Winter Blues

Hi Jen, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Hibiscus plant you brought inside for the winter months.

This can be a common problem with the Hibiscus and tropical plants when they are brought inside during the colder months.

I would recommend a couple of things to do. Go ahead and transplant your Hibiscus into a new pot. Add some good quality potting soil to the pot. Make sure it has vermiculite and humus in the mixture.

Once you have transplanted the plant, keep it on a good watering schedule but don't over water. You can even mist the branches after transplanting. This will help with the no humidity indoors.

I also recommend feeding the Hibiscus with a good quality plant food. Make sure the plant food has iron, copper, and some manganese minerals in it. These minerals are good for Hibiscus.

I hope this helps and the best of luck to you. Let us know how your Hibiscus makes out. Thanks again Jen for asking the question. Feel free to ask anytime. I hope you are having a wonderful day!
Kimberly
