how and when to feed trees

Hi Kimberly,
Can you tell me (for zone 7) when and how to feed or fertilize trees? I have all kinds, from 300 year old oaks, to 30 year old dogwoods and evergreens, to new crepe myrtles planted just this year. Thanks. I am loving your site, btw!

Feeding Trees and Shrubs
by: Kimberly

Hi Kate, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking your questions on feed your trees. Thank you also for the compliment. I am glad you are enjoying the Web site.

300 year old trees or other well established trees or shrubs receive their own food from the ground and natural surroundings. You don't have to feed them unless for some reason they go into shock. Once establised, plant specimens will find their own natural nourishment from nature.

Any new trees or shrubs that have just been planted, can be feed around twice a year. In our zone seven, I recommend early spring and fall. Crepe Myrtles can be fed in February, after pruning is done.

Another option for you is to periodically add some organic mushroom compost to the soil. This is a great natural fertilizer that will last up to one year. It doesn't smell great, but your trees, shrubs, and other plants will love it.

I hope this has answered your question and thank you again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day!
Kimberly
