How do I know how much soil to order to build up from erosion in my yard

How do I know how much soil to order to build up from erosion in my yard. My house is located on the down slope of a hill, there is a lot of erosion and I feel that it's time to add some fill at least to my front yard. I am in Maryland, and my soil has a heavy concentration of clay in it. I am planning on aerating the soil that is there and planting seed for grass. But I just don't know what type of soil to add. I read that you suggested a mix of sand topsoil and sawdust?

Soil To Hill To Help With Erosion
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking the question on your hill and front yard.

Yes, you did read about my recommendation on the type of soil to use for erosion and other projects. You have a clay base soil, which I also do in my climate zone. Add anywhere from four inches up to a foot of good quality top soil. If available in your area, a mixture of black dirt, saw dust, and sand works great. One of the nurseries locally here does this mixture and it worked well for my crew and myself.

You may want to put down Jute on your hill. This is a commercial grade landscape fabric that is made out of burlap. It is installed along highways and other slopes or hills. It will help with the erosion.

Getting back to the top soil, if you cannot find the mixture, make sure the top soil you purchase is of good quality and will compliment your clay soil and not erode more. If you have different nurseries in your area, find out from each of them what is available and the cost. Working a slope takes a little more work, but done properly will take care of the problem.

If you need any further help, please let us know here at the Web site. The best of luck to you and keep us informed on what you found and how things turn out. Have a great day and thanks again for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you.
