How much water on Indian hawthorns

(Dacula Ga)

My Indian hawthorn shrubs have started getting yellow leaves. My husband says he give them a little water every 2 to 3 days. Is that enough or too much? Why are the leaves turning yellow. We live in central Georgia.

How Much Water To Give Indian Hawthorns
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on watering your Indian Hawthorn.

Yellow leaves are due to either too much water or not enough. Indian Hawthorn like most shrubs, once they are established they don't need that much water. I live in South Carolina and like you in Georgia, we haven't had much rain.

If your Indian Hawthorn have been recently planted, your goal is to get the roots established. Take a hose and do a slow drip around the base of the shrubs. Change the location of the hose every five to ten minutes. This will let the water go into the ground to give the roots a good watering. Do this twice a week for the first few weeks. If you haven't, put pine straw or mulch around the shrubs. This will help retain the moisture in the ground.

If your Indian Hawthorn are established, don't water them every two or three days. They don't need it, and this could be why the leaves are turning yellow.

Yellow leaves are a sign of stress. Do these steps above and the leaves and shrubs should be fine. If they continue to turn yellow, take a sharp knife and scratch the surface of a couple of branches. If green, the plant is still healthy. If brown, the shrubs are in shock. You can take a couple of leaves and a branch to a local nursery and have them check it out.

I do think the solution for the both of you is to get on a good watering schedule with how established your Indian Hawthorn are.

Thanks again for asking the question and feel free to ask anytime here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day!
Kimberly
