how to put a patio on top of a hill

by corey
(missouri)

Our house sits on a hill. About 15 feet behind the house our back yard drops down about 10 feet. I would like to put a patio on top of the hill behind the house. Do I need to put a retaining wall up below the hill, and is it possible to incorporate steps into this retaining wall to connect the two elevations?

How To Put A Patio On Top Of Hill

Hi Corey, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for understanding my delay in answering your question.

Yes you can put a retaining wall to connect the two elevations. I would recommend a three to four foot retaining walling with an opening in the middle with steps. You can build your retaining wall with stackable bricks or stone. The steps will need to be prepped by digging out the soil. Your goal is to make sure the steps are level. You are creating a terrace look.

My crew and I have done this on a few jobs. The main goal is to plan out the project. If you would like some more detailed help on how to create the steps and retaining wall ask right here. This sounds like a really nice project for your outside investment.

If you want to do this type of landscaping I would recommend checking around local stores and price out different stackable material. You can purchase stackable material to match your house and other outdoor features.

Thanks Corey and look forward to hearing from you. This is a doable project if planned out correctly. Have a great day.
