Plan - Prep - Plant Your Way To Beautiful Gardens And Landscapes

In need of expertise

I have just put in a new flower garden in front of my house and I was planning on putting a small cedar tree in with the rest of the shrubs, etc. (the far right corner by the deck in the pic) I have since decided not to, but I was wondering what kind of shrub or tree would work. I need something full and can only grow to about 5 feet in height since it is in front of a window. Any suggestions?

In Need Of Experise - Newly Planted Garden
by: Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your new garden bed by your deck. Thank you also for the picture as this is a great visual. Here are a few suggestions from looking at the photo and reading what you are looking for.

You are looking for around a five foot shrub or small tree to give you a full look in the bed. This shrub or small tree will become your focal point in this particular area. The one thing to think about is the plant specimens you already have planted and their maturity size. I would recommend if you want a specimen around five feet that you plant it far enough away from foundation so specimen will grow properly both in height and width.

An option for you since you just planted the rest of the plants, put your five foot shrub centered, with the other plants accenting the five foot shrub throughout the rest of your bed.
This means you may have to replant the specimens, but you won't harm them by doing this now, before their roots get established. Here are some suggestions of shrubs for you to use as the focal point. I am not sure what geographic location you are in.

1. Loropetalum - full evergreen shrub that has varieties that will grow four to six feet. Pink-red tone flowers.
2. Blue Owl Juniper - full evergreen shrub
3. Cleyera - full evergreen shrub that can be kept pruned around five feet.
4. Viburnum - great evergreen flowering shrub
5. Certain smaller Hollies - evergreen
6. Lemon Thread Cypress - evergreen that can be pruned.

I wouldn't recommend a tree with this size garden and close to your foundation. You could go with a dwarf tree, but know how the roots spread out.

I hope this has given you some ideas. Let us know if you need some more suggestions and also what you decide. Thanks again for asking the question, and have a great day.
Kimberly
