Hi Patricia, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking the question on pruning your Indian Hawthorn.
The best time to prune it is fall, before the berries come out on the shrub. Start from the top and work your way around the shrub. Always cut at an angle and never cut straight across. I recommend to try and keep the Indian Hawthorn in its natural form. If the berries have appeared, you can wait until after bloom time in the spring.
The page on properly pruning shrubs and trees on this site will show you a couple of photos that may help also. I hope this answers your question and thanks again for asking a question here at landscape solutions for you. Feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
