Is coconut palm native in the Caribbean?

Has the coconut palm been transplanted from the southern pacific onto the Caribbean Islands? I recall reading several years ago about someone ( perhaps Donald Street? )planting coconuts on several Caribbean Islands and I have always wondered if they were not native. I grew up in Lake Worth, Palm Beach Co., and my favorite tree was the coconut palm tree.

Thank you, David Sebastian

Coconut Palm Native To The Caribbean?
by: Kimberly

Hi David, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on the Coconut Palm tree. This is an excellent question that has been asked for many, many years. There is no definite record of the Coconut Palm from all the resources I have seen that states for sure if this Palm specie originally was native to the Caribbean Islands. Researchers have had fossils found in New Zealand. Coconut Palms are native to the Southern Pacific and found also in South Africa and Cooks Island.

Tom and I have been to the Caribbean and have seen the Coconut Palm in Mexico and Dominican Republic. Also in southwestern Florida. The Coconut Palm is considered subtropical and tropical. So, to answer your question on the Coconut Palm, like many others, I don't think anyone is really sure if the Coconut Palm was really native to some Caribbean Islands. If anyone else has some input for David on this topic, that would be great.

Thanks again David for asking a wonderful question, and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day!
Kimberly
