Evergreen Tree For Under Oak Tree
by: Kimberly

Hi Betty, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on what evergreen tree will grow in the shade and deer resistant.

Unfortunately deer will eat most plant specimens. There are safe products available today that will deter deer from eating the plants. I would check with your local nursery or garden center for products in your area.

As far as evergreen trees, Under an Oak tree you will have to go with a dwarf tree or shrubs. I recommend shrubs as they have a better chance of healthy growth. Here are a few suggestions.

I am not sure where in the midwest you are but most likely in zone five.

1. Azaleas - Will do well in shade and some varieties do great in the midwest.
2. Mountain Lauel - does well in zones four through eight and likes shade to partial shade.
3. There are many Juniper specimens (smaller varieties that will do well)
4. Some Cypress wil also do well in partial to full shade. Dwarf Hinoki and Mop will be good options.

These are just a couple that come to mind. Let me know if you need more suggestions. I hope this helps some with answering your question. Thanks again Betty and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
