Hi Brittany, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking a question about your backyard. You have many options to consider when you are starting from scratch. The main goal to start out with is to think of your yard as your outside investment. Even if you stay in this house two years, investing now will raise the value of your home in two years. Budget is always a factor, so weigh both of these aspects out in your mind. I would recommend phase planning. The first issue to address is your drainage problem. See where the water is going, and divert the water away from the problem area. This can be done with a rock pathway, corrugated pipes in a small trench, adding a drain box, or even putting in a French drain. Plan your overall landscape by deciding on an overall budget. Research the cost of redoing sod compared to preparing and planting some defined beds. Consider doing a partial sod and some beds. Always prep first before you plant anything. An idea when you are planting is to get your base foundation first of trees. This will get you started with growth in your hard. A few flowering trees and some evergreen trees, would dress up the area for starters. Of course you can do the whole project at once of planting trees, shrubs, flowers, and herbs if this is what you want.
