Leaves are drying up and dying on part of Cleveland pear tree

by Barb
(Illinois)

Our Cleveland pear tree bloomed beautifully this spring. However, we just noticed that it has some dried dead foliage on it and appears to be thinning. Other leaves are green. It's only 10 years old or so. Is there a fertilizer that we can use to give it a boost?

Leaves Dying On Cleveland Pear Tree
by: Kimberly

Hi Barb, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thanks for asking the question on your Cleveland Pear Tree.

There are a couple of things that come to mind with leaves falling off after bloom time. One is the tree could be shedding the older leaves. This happens sometimes.

The other possibility is to add some organic mushroom compost to the soil. You can add a tree and shrub fertilizer. You can find the fertilizer at most chain or specialty stores. I personally recommend the organic mushroom compost, as it is a natural fertilizer that will last up to one year. Loosen the soil around the tree, and add some of this compost to the tree. Water and the tree should do well.

You can also add a bloom and leaf enhancer, which you can purchase at most stores.

To double check for stress, take a sharp small knife and scratch the surface of the trunk or branches. If they are green, the tree is fine. If brown, the tree could be in some type of shock. Also check for fungus or insects. Sometimes this could be the problem also.

I hope this has helped and let us know what you find out. Thanks again Barb for asking the question here at landscape solutions for you. Have a great day!
Kimberly
