Leaves Turning Black On Newly Planted Cleveland Pear
by: Kimberly

Hi Rick, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thank you for asking the question on your newly planted Cleveland Pear tree.

A few things you will need to do.

1. Is there a warranty on the tree from where you got it?

2. It sounds like the tree could have a disease. I would recommend you first take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface of the trunk and a couple of branches. If it is green, the tree is still alive. If it is brown, the tree is in shock with the possibility of disease.

3. You can prune off the branches that have the black leaves on them. Apply a fungicide to the branches and tree.

4. I would also recommend to stop fertilizing for now. Once a plant specimen's root system gets somewhat established, you don't need to fertilize often, once or twice a year.

Rick, I think your main goal is to identify what is causing the leaves to turn black. Try first to identify if the entire tree is in shock. Newly planted trees can go into shock and stress for a variety of reasons. You might want to consider cutting an affected branch off with the black leaves and taking it to a local nursery. Give them details of how much you have watered and also the fertilizer you are using.

I hope these tips have helped and we will be interested to find out what is going on with your Cleveland Pear, as well as how you solved the problem. If you need more suggestions, feel free to ask. Thanks again Rick for asking your question, and the best of luck with this situation. Have a great day!
Kimberly
