LOROPETALUM Starting to Come Alive

by Pamela
(Hinesville, GA)

Hi Kim,

Thanks for all of your help! I've taken your advice and also that of my local nursery, my Loropetalum is starting to come alive.

I've taken newer pictures so that you could see how well it has begun to bloom new leaves.

My question is, will new branches sprout from the roots or along the trunk? After performing the scratch test and discovering that most of the branches that never sprouted leaves were completely dead, I cut them all off at an angle near the the trunk.

Also, we've been having lots and lots of rain here in southeast Georgia and my Loropetalum is truly benefiting from it. Oh, I plucked all of the leaves that had holes in them or white power looking rings on them. That treatment for shrub and tree insect control stuff seem to be working as well:-)

What do you think?

Lorpetalum Starting To Come Alive
by: Kimberly

Hi Pamela, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thanks for sending us the photo of your Loropetalum. The shrub looks 100 percent better from your previous pictures. I am so happy for you that you took the correct steps in identifying the problem. Great job!

Yes, there is a good chance you will begin to see new shoots at the bottom of the Loropetalum. Sometimes you will also get runners off this plant. If you do, you will see the runners start in a new area close by. An option for you is to carefully dig up the runner so you won't disturb the small root system. Put the small plug into a pot with a light weight potting soil, warm water to start with, and a root hormone. You can get the root hormone at garden centers and nurseries.

Water it properly, and you could very well have another Loropetalum to plant. The runners may not show up for awhile, but something for you to watch for in the future.

Thanks again Pamela for giving us an update. Have a great day.
Kimberly
