Mulching areas around plants which have pre-existing grass.

Must you entirely dig up the grass in order to mulch an area around a plant, where the area already has grass. Can you simply cover the grass and put a black liner on top?

Mulching Around Plants With Grass
by: Kimberly

Hi Ron, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on mulching around plants with grass. This is a very good question and one I have dealt with my clients.

One of the problems you have with digging up grass is that you don't always get the entire root system. In a few weeks, the grass begins to grow again. Very similar to weeds.

I would recommend to carefully put down a grass killer so you make sure you get all the roots out. Wait anywhere from three to seven days to ensure you have killed off all the grass roots. An option for you is to lay down landscape fabric and secure with stakes. The landscape fabric will help defer weeds from growing up through the mulch. It will also hold down any possible new grass that might possibly come up. After laying the fabric, you can go ahead and put the mulch down.

The grass killer will not harm any shrubs or other types of plants. One thing I do is to take an old cookie tray and just to be safe, hold the tray to close to the plant while you spray. This has worked well for me in the past.

I hope this answers your question and if you need any further help with this particular project or any other landscape project, feel free to to ask right here at landscape solutions for you. Thanks again and have a great day!
Kimberly
