My Ailing Palm

by GwenBailey
(St.Catharines, ON Canada)

I recently was given a indoor palm tree (4 1/2 ft. tall, one trunk, narrow leaves near the top. It's leaves have some spots and a couple turned yellow. I added 10-15-10 fertilizer in a litre of water two days ago and it doesn't look any better. Should I give it new soil? I understand you water it again when the top ground is dry to the touch. I'm not sure of the amount of water after you've given it the first one litre treatment. I appreciate your help. gwen

Your Ailing Palm
by: Kimberly

Hi Gwen, Kimberly here from landscape-solutions-for-you. Thanks for asking the question on your indoor palm tree.

Many indoor plants, especially tropical in nature will go through a shock period in a new environment. The yellow leaves are a sign of this. Make sure you have the palm in a sunny location and don't over water. You can check the soil to see what type of soil was used. Palms enjoy a part sand and light weight soil. If there isn't any sand in the soil, you might want to consider new soil.

I would recommend moving the plant first to another location and see what this does. Track your watering schedule for a few weeks. To me, it sounds like the palm is in some form of shock. Go through these steps to test for shock.

1. Watering techniques
2. Sunlight
3. Soil

I hope this has helped and keep us updated on how the palm is doing. Thank you again for asking the question on your palm, and feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day!
Kimberly
