My Neighbor's Tree Needs Help!

by Trish
(Lakewood, OH)

Hi, This is a photo of my neighbors tree. She thinks it might be a Cleveland Plum, but since we can't find anything on it, we are thinking maybe a Cleveland Pear. Her son gave it to her about 10 years ago in a paper cup from school. It desperately needs to be pruned and shaped and she wants it done yesterday. I told her I would check on the internet to see what I could find out and I found your website. It does have white flowers in the spring. Any suggestions would be great. Right now it is about 10-12 feet tall.

Thank you.

Thank you Kimberly!

Thank you for the information. I am giving it to my neighbor in the morning. It was really helpful and I appreciate it. I must say this is the most informative and responsive website I have seen for landscaping. My husband and I are both just learning about landscaping our yard and found your site very informative.

Thank you again.

Neighbor's Tree Needs Help!
by: Kimberly

Hi Trish, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your neighbor's tree.

From the picture of the leaf, it is a Cleveland or Braford Pear tree. They bloom in the spring and have white mass flowers on them. From the leaf picture it looks like there is an insect that may be infesting the leaves. That is why there is some holes in the leaf.

As far as pruning, you can prune a Cleveland or Braford Pear tree right after bloom time in the spring. I don't recommend to my clients to prune during the hot summer months. It would be a good idea to tell your neighbor that if she can be patient, wait until September when the weather cools down a little. The fall is the best time of year to prune most trees and shrubs.

Always prune at an angle and try and keep the tree in it's natural form. I will link you to the properly pruning page here at landscape solutions for you. This may help her out in properly prune the tree.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask a question anytime here. Thanks again Trish, and let us know how your neighbor makes out.

Also, she might want to take a couple of leaves to a local nursery and have them identify what insect is chewing on the leaves. They will be able to tell her what product to put on the tree to get rid of those nasty pests. Have a great evening.
