Nandinas

Hi Marcy, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your Nandinas.

A couple of things. From the what you described, it sounds like your Nanadinas are established. If they are there could be a couple of things going on. If you have had a lot of rain and a dip in the temperatures, this could cause Nandinas to loose some leaves.

One of the best ways to identify what is going on is to check a branch of the Nandinas. Take a small sharp knife and scratch the surface of a branch. If the branch is green, the shrub is alive. If it has brown color it may be in shock.

Shock could be caused by a disease of fungi, too much water, or lack of some nutrients. Nandinas once established are pretty hardy except for high wind and ice. Even then they come back.

I am not sure which variety you have. The dwarf Fire Power is a hardy Nandina.

Check the branch and see what color it is. You may need to loosen in the dirt and add some organic mushroom compost to the soil. This is an organic fertilizer that will last up to one year.

Your main goal is to try and identify if it could be a fungus or disease. You don't want either to spread to other plants.

Your other option is to take a branch to a local nursery and see if they can identify the problem.

Let us know what you find out. The best to you on your Nanadina, and thanks again for asking the question. Feel free to ask anytime. Have a great day.
Kimberly
