Making Your Navel Oranges Sweeter
by: Kimberly

Hi David, Kimberly here from landscape solutions for you. Thank you for asking the question on your navel orange tree. I am not sure what variety you have. Is your soil clay base? If it is clay base than it is an alkaline base, which has a lot of acid in it. You could add a small amount of lime or gypsum to the soil.

From my knowledge of navel oranges, especially Valencia and Washington varieties, they are the sweetest. You can experiment with adding lime to your soil if it is alkaline base. If you haven't yet, it is a good idea to have your soil tested. This is true for not only growing fruit trees, but different trees and shrubs, especially a specie like a Hydrangea.

If you could give a little information on your soil base, could give you better suggestions on care of nave orange tree for the future. Watering should be done once a week if no rain. Four to five times a year you should add some nitrogen to the soil. I like using a slow release.

I hope this helps and feel free to add some more to your question, and myself or others may be able to help you out more. Thanks again David, and look forward to hearing from you. Have a great evening.
Kimberly
